Artist Initiative Links -Puddles 2001The exhibition of recent works by Christoph Bangart is comprised of a site-specific wall painting and some tableaus. The tableaus are acrylic paintings on canvas, consisting of a minimum number of planes and lines. At first glance, the lines look to be blurred. However on closer inspection, it becomes apparent that this optical blurring of the parallel lines, results from subtle changes in the gradation of brightness and chroma.
Looking at the canvas edges, you will notice that the painted lines extend beyond the face of the canvas and some touches of paint remain as traces. Leaving these painted actions unfinished, implies that the unpainted planes and lines continue onwards beyond the canvas. The lines are intended to continue to infinity. The composition of the rectangles painted directly on the wall surface was calculated from the dimensions of the wall and pillars of CAS gallery, using a computer.
The tableaus were made in the same way as the wall painting, with the defining factor of their composition being the rectangles. In spite of this compositional austerity, we are not left with a cool impression, but rather a lingering sensation which persists and remains in the mind. Christoph Bangart's carefully calculated lines and colored planes are forming a new emotional world which we can call post-minimalism.
